Flea treatment - how to know if you are winning

Published by katiemc at 10:17 pm under Flea treatment issues Edit This

When you are in the middle of a nasty flea infestation and your pet, and even worse YOU, are being bitten, you may think this is a nightmare that you’ll never be able to solve.

The reason many people think this is because they’ve paid good money from their veterinarian for a flea treatment, and they’ve used it and 24 hours later the stuff has dried and the pet is still covered with fleas.

Why is this?

It’s easy to see fleas on your pets and think that the flea treatment is not working. In fact, if you could put a little pink dot on the back of every flea you saw (if you could catch them) and the next day that flea was still alive and well - then sure, you’d have a problem on your hands. However, if you used a good flea treatment, then chances are you would not find the one with the dot - it would be dead.

OK, you say, well there’s no chance that I’d manage to get a dot on the back of a flea - is there any other way I can tell?

In some respects, fleas are just like kids (but not vice versa of course - I’m not wanting to start World War III ;) ) - the young ones are little, and the older ones are big.

So if you start using a quality flea treatment and there are still tons of them there - check out the size and speed of them.

1) If they are slow the flea treatment is starting to kill them.

2) If they are small black, fleas they’ve only been on your pet for a number of hours - the older ones are dead.

So, while I agree there is no way to monitor your flea treatment by putting a pink dot on the back of the odd flea and monitoring them that way - the way that you can do it is to check out if they are small black and slow.

A flea that is small black and slow will soon be dead, and while you are likely to see fleas tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow you are definitely winning the war against fleas.
